Born in Athens, Greece in 1974, Christos Asonitis developed a passion for rock music as a child. At 16, he acquired his first drum kit and began performing with various bands, including “Suddenly” and the band of Petros Theotokatos.
He studied drums at the Conservatory of Filippos Nakas, where he was influenced by his mentor Spyros Panagiotopoulos and discovered his love for jazz. Over the years, Christos collaborated with notable Greek artists and musicians while dedicating his career to jazz and Latin music.
In Greece, he performed with prominent figures in the local jazz scene, participated in various festivals, and recorded multiple albums as a band member or sideman including “Jazzium” (2010), “Jazz on T.A.P”, (2012), “In Paris” (2013), “O Grande Amor” (2014) . His musical journey also took him to Brazil and Cuba, where he learned from esteemed drummers such as Kiko Freitas, Marcos Suzano and Enrique Pla.
In 2012, he moved to Germany, where he played with various ensembles and pursued a master’s degree in Jazz Drums at the University of Music and Performing Arts, graduating in 2015. His debut album as a bandleader, “An Ode To The Light,” was released in 2018, receiving critical acclaim.
In 2021, he co-produced “Rapsodia Cubana” with his wife Yamile Cruz Montero, exploring the fusion of contemporary Cuban and popular music. Concerts in Germany, UK, France, Cuba, Switzerland and Greece follow its release. His second album as a composer is already recorded and mixed and will be released very soon.
A sought-after performer and educator, Christos currently is the subject matter specialist for Drums and Percussion at International School of Musicians, teaches at Musikstudio X&Y in Munich and endorses Gabriel Drums, Vic Firth, and Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals.
